First-Year Teacher Makes Her First Big Mistake

Miss Texas

Remember when you were in high school and your Social Studies teacher was 23 or 24? And he or she seemed so mature at the time, but now you think "Damn, how can they let people that young teach high school?" Well, young as they were, at least most of those first-year teachers had the sense not to date us.

Unfortunately, former Miss Texas contestant Amy McElhenney didn't get that memo. A first year Spanish teacher and cross-country coach, 25-year old Miss McElhenney figured she was safe dating an 18-year old student. After all, he's legally an adult. Oops! Turns out that she might have beat the statutory rape case, but violated another law regarding improper relationships between teachers and students, no matter the age difference. So far, five Texas teachers have been convicted under the law since it went into effect in September 2003.

But of course, as one Bad Love reader notes, "She's 25? And he's 18? Aw, let her have a little fun."

Fun? Sure. But still bad love? Definitely.
